Joshua Curtis is a photographer from the Austin, Texas. The coolest city in Texas. I met Joshua in Nairobi, Kenya in the middle of the Mathare Valley slum. It was in the spring of 2010 and I walked around the corner of the church into the front parking lot and I see Joshua getting out of the missionary’s truck. He had this Texas Longhorn ball cap on and I just happened to have my Alabama Crimson Tide cap on that day so I had to give him a big ol’ hearty “Roll Tide!” See, Alabama had just won the National College Football BCS Championship game over Joshua’s team. It was all good natured and I told him that he was on the other side of the world and still had to hear smack about the game. He gave me that big grin he has and that was the extent of the ribbing about the game. That’s how our first meeting went that day. We hung out the rest of the day. Took pictures, got to know each other and then we went our separate ways. Over the past couple of years we have kept up with each other. We ended up going out together into the slum and crawled up on the roof of a five story apartment building which was a truly unique moment. As my daughter commented when she saw Joshua’s pictures of me shooting up there….”there’s my Daddy on top of the world in Africa!” and that’s how I truly felt that day so I was able to share a very cool moment in my life with Joshua that day.
Joshua is a fine photographer and really has a great heart for humanitarian work and I look forward to working with him in the future as dbWorldwide continues to grow and expand. He has a personal project that he has been working on for a bit and in the video he talks about his inspiration for it and what it has meant to him personally and professionally. Take a couple of minutes and check him out. You won’t be sorry.
